In the heart of the Barossa Valley, winemaking has reigned strong for centuries, bringing local grape flavours to the masses through careful cultivation and plenty of hard work.

Peter Lehmann Wines

The Peter Lehmann Winery is one of the best-loved wineries in the region. Built in the late 1970s it is one of the newer wineries in the region, but it brings with it a tonne of dedication and years of experience in the form of its owner, Peter Lehmann.

The Story of Peter Lehmann

Lehmann himself has been dubbed Baron of the Barossa because of his dedication to the wine industry in the region. These days, he is a legend in the Australian wine world and has helped evolve and shape the industry over seven decades.

Born in the Barossa Valley in a small village called Angaston, Lehmann started life as the mischievous son of the local pastor. But when Lehmann was 14 his father died, a milestone that impacted the rest of his life. He left school and, with his mother’s blessing, started as an apprentice at the Yalumba winery in 1947. He worked there and in another winery for the next 12 years, where he acquired connections and skills that would help him open his own winery.

It was in 1979 when Lehmann finally opened his own winery, where he would bring together is loyalty and commitment to the Barossa winemaking industry and his well-honed winemaking skills. His main aim was to protect the grape growers of the Barossa region and ensure winemaking remained a stalwart part of Australian culture.

Peter Lehmann Cellar Door

The winery itself is set inside an old stone building that’s over a century old. Over time, it has been renovated to give it a sleek and sophisticated look, and it is now home to a contemporary hospitality centre that promises a potted living history of winemaking in the Barossa Valley.

It is open every single day, offering visitors the chance to sample more than 40 wines with the help of knowledgeable guides who are committed to their craft.

Weighbridge Platter

As well as wine tasting, you can also tuck into some delicious flavours from the region with the Weighbridge Platter. This incorporates a collection of local produce, including cheese from the Barossa Valley Cheese Company, homemade chutney, and Linke’s Mettwurst and Lachsschinken. The platter is available for guests every day between 11am and 3.30pm, and there is a vegetarian option available, too.
