The Barossa Valley is home to some of the biggest names in the wine industry, including household brands like Jacob’s Creek and Wolf Blass.

The Barossa Valley is predominantly known for its creation of Shiraz and Riesling. However, it also produces large (and tasty!) quantities of cabernet sauvignon, Mataro, Semillon, and Grenache.

The Barossa Valley is situated to the north east of Adelaide and was heavily influenced by German settlers. Lutherans fleeing persecution in Prussia arrived in South Australia and quickly settled in the rolling hill. This has given it a unique position in the winemaking world.

The region boasts a hot and continental climate, meaning that the grapes grown there are incredibly ripe. This quickly led to the area’s boom as a fortified wine haven. However, the warm weather also means the grapes have high sugar levels and a low acid count. This gives each bottle of tipple a unique, distinctly Barossa flavour.

Over the past few decades, the valley has created its own unique winemaking technique. Many wine makers add acids to balance out the flavours. As a result, the wines produced generally have a higher alcohol count.

Without a doubt, Shiraz is the most popular variety of grape in the region. Its popularity led the Barossa Valley to its international fame. However, the region also produces a variety of other varieties. Most cellar doors offer a variety of wines for you to indulge in. As more wineries arrive in the area, cellar doors are serving more varied wines.

These include world-famous varieties like Semillon, Riesling, Grenache, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

For the most part, the Barossa Valley produces red varieties of win. However, there are also many amazing white wines produced here. One that is particularly noteworthy is Riesling. This German-inspired wine harks back to the region’s German history. However, the varieties produced here often include more grapes than those produced in other regions of the country.
