Nestled in Adelaide Hills is a charming German artisan town.
A short half hour drive from Adelaide welcomes you to a small German town, Hahndorf.
This quaint town is located in the Adelaide Hills and is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Even though it was founded in 1839, the Peramangk people were living here for thousands of years.
Ideally, you can spend at least two hours in Hanhdorf. You could spend longer exploring the shops, grabbing food, or indulging in a wine tasting! The best way to get around Hahndorf is on foot, but there are buses if you’re not keen on walking.
Visit Art Galleries And Museums
The art galleries and museums showcase artwork from local, national, and international artists. The galleries and museums also feature First Nations history and artwork. You’ll learn more about the Peramangk people who were settled in the area long before Hahndorf was established.
Hahndorf Main Street
Down Mount Barker Road lies the main shopping strip in Hahndorf, with plenty of boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants to explore. Ensure you pop into the German Arms Hotel, Colour Door, and Begin Again Hahndorf.
Wineries
In the Hanhdorf area, there are a couple of great wineries to visit to taste the local wines.
Sidewood Estate
Sidewood Estate is a family owned winery nestled in Hahndorf. Visit the cellar door for a wine tasting or wine flight, or dine in for a mouthwatering lunch. They offer a range of white and red wines, as well as rosé.
Hahndorf Hill Winery
On the edge of Hahndorf is this charming winery, which produces a selection of white and red wines. Soak in the stunning views and visit the cellar door for a wine flight paired with cheese, chocolate, or ice cream.
Beerenberg Farm
A popular Hahndorf attraction is the Beerenberg Farm, a shop filled with delicious jams, relishes, honey, and sauces. While their products are available across Australia, there are exclusive items you can only buy in store!
During your visit, you’ll have the chance to learn about how they make their mouthwatering products.
Before you head to Hahndorf, consider checking out Mt Lofty, the Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens, and a couple of wineries nearby. Otherwise, you can book this tour which includes a stop in Hahndorf! This tour takes you through the Barossa Valley for wine tastings, with a stop at Hahndorf to explore the boutique shops.
