What is the Whispering Wall in the Barossa Valley?

The Whispering Wall was built between 1899 and 1903. It’s located in Williamstown in South Australia, and it’s an hour’s drive away from Adelaide. Traditionally, it was built to collect and supply water for the Gawler. But it has another interesting, accidentally-cool property!

It’s unique in its architecture, and it’s extra unique in that a single whisper echoes and vibrates onto the other side of the wall.

The wall is made of locally sourced dolomite and limestone. The curve is shaped around the contour of the valley, and it captures sound in the middle of it.

The Whispering Wall has also been called the Barossa Reservoir – but it’s not quite as catchy!

The parabola effect: The sound vibrates

This unique phenomenon is called the parabola effect. So if a noise is made from one end of the wall 140 metres away, it travels over to the other end – it’s a unique and unusual phenomenon, and because of this, it has become a popular tourist attraction.

This phenomenon got the Whispering Wall featured in the Scientific American!

Wildlife is abundant in the area, too.

Visiting the Whispering Wall

When you visit the Whispering Wall, check out its unique audible properties! Try it out with your travel buddy, and get them to whisper something at the other end of the wall. These whisper spots are called ‘Whisper Stations’. Stand 140 metres away from the opposing Whisper Station, and the quietest sound will travel down to you.

The reservoir is a popular tourist spot – so check out its unique charm!

Whisper and wine

Of course, the Barossa is home to many other interesting and unique spots…like it’s abundance of wineries!

The Barossa is, of course, Australia’s most famous wine region. Visitors of the Barossa can explore some of the world’s best wineries and sample some of the top wines the area has to offer.

World-class wineries, picturesque vineyards and charming little towns are nestled in the cosy green countryside, offering a great day out if you’re visiting South Australia. Think rolling green hills, lines with rows of parallel vineyards.
